Or maybe something in your life has shifted lately, and for the first time in a long time you've found yourself typing “church near me” into your phone late at night.

Whatever brought you here, we're glad you came looking.

We also know something about that search. For most people, the hardest part of visiting a new church isn't finding one, but it is walking through the door the first time. You don't know where to park. You don't know what people wear. You don't know if you'll be asked to stand up and introduce yourself in front of everyone.

So let's take the mystery out of it. Here is honestly what happens when you visit Cornerstone Baptist Church.

We're right on Manchester Road, which makes us an easy drive from Ellisville, Clarkson Valley, Chesterfield, Ballwin, Eureka, and the surrounding West County communities. If you're coming from Highway 109 or Highway 100, you'll find us without much trouble. We are just a half mile west of Wildwood Middle School and Big Chief Restaurant.

If you're visiting for the first time, Sunday morning at 10:30 is the easiest place to start. You don't have to come to Sunday School first. You don't have to commit to the whole day. Come to one service and see what you think.

What Actually Happens on a Sunday Morning

Here's the honest walkthrough.

You arrive. Come a few minutes early if you can — not because you'll be late otherwise, but because it gives you a moment to get your bearings instead of walking in during the first hymn. Someone will likely greet you at the door. They will be friendly. They will not follow you around.  When you park, walk to the South building that you first drove by when entering the property (the main entrance is under the carport).

You find a seat. Anywhere you like. Nobody has assigned seats. If you'd rather sit near the back for your first visit, sit near the back. That's a perfectly normal thing to do and nobody thinks twice about it.

We sing. We sing the old hymns — and we sing them with genuine excitement, not as a formality. If you grew up with these songs, you'll recognize them immediately. If you didn't, the words are provided and nobody expects you to know them by heart. Plenty of people just listen the first time.

We preach the Bible. Our pastor, Michael McDowell, preaches straight from the Word of God. We use the King James Bible. If you don't own one or didn't bring one, that's not a problem — we'll get one in your hands, and the passage will be clearly announced so you can follow along in whatever Bible you brought.

You go home. That's it. No pressure, no cornering in the parking lot, no obligation to come back.

The Questions People Are Actually Wondering

What should I wear? You'll see a range. Most folks dress up in their “Sunday best.” What matters far more to us is that you're here. Please don't let a closet full of "nothing to wear" keep you home on Sunday — that would be a genuinely terrible reason to miss church.

Will I be singled out or made to stand up? No. We're glad when visitors come, and someone will probably introduce themselves and say hello. But we're not going to put a spotlight on you or make you announce yourself to the room. Pastor may recognize you from the pulpit to welcome you, but will not embarrass you at all.

Will you ask me for money? No. We take an offering as part of our worship, as churches have always done — but that's for our members and regular attenders. As a guest, you are our guest. Let the plate pass.

What about my kids? Children are genuinely welcome here — not just tolerated. We're a family-friendly church, and that includes the wiggly years. You will not be the only parent with a restless toddler. We have a two nurseries available, one for infants, and another for toddlers (up to 3 years old).  We also have a children’s church for children ages 4-6.  But, your children are welcome to stay with you in the main auditorium.

How long is the service? Typically, the service lasts from 60-75 minutes, though on occasion it may last 90 minutes.

What does "independent Baptist" mean? It means we're not governed by a denominational headquarters — this congregation makes its own decisions under the authority of Scripture. Practically speaking, what you'll find is a conservative, Bible-believing Baptist church: traditional in worship, plain in preaching, and serious about the Bible being true.

Do I have to be a Christian to come? Not at all. Some of the most important people in this room on any given Sunday are the ones still working out what they believe. You are welcome to come, sit, listen, and decide nothing at all.

What We're Actually About

We're a conservative, KJV, Bible-believing Baptist church. We hold to traditional worship while believing the Bible speaks directly to the life you're living this week.

Our purpose here is fourfold: to exalt the name of God in everything we do, to encourage one another toward holiness, to share the love of Christ with our community, and to advance His kingdom through outreach and missions.

What that looks like on the ground is a church with children, teenagers, single adults, young married couples, and folks who've been walking with the Lord for sixty years — all in the same room, which is a rarer thing than it used to be. Whatever season you're in, there's a place here for you and people who will care about you in it.
